The annual provincial palliative care conference will be held May 24-25, 2018 at the Old Orchard Inn in Wolfville, NS.
The event titled: A Palliative Approach: Clinical Pearls, is cohosted by the Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association and the Western Zone Palliative Care Programs.
The event will feature Dr. Sandy Buchman, the incoming president of the Canaidna Medical Association. Dr. Buchman’s sessions will focus on the management of complex cases and integrating a palliative approach across settings of care. Dr. Buchman has spent much of his career as a family physician, and with a focus on providing home-based palliative care.
During the event, Dr. Buchman will also be awarded the 2018 Gillian MacMichael Lectureship in Palliative Care. The lectureship is the result of a partnership between the family of Gillian MacMichael, the Gillian MacMichael Endowment Fund of the QEII Health Sciences Centre (QEII HSC) Foundation and the Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association (NSHPCA). The partnership supports a visiting speaker annually to enhance the educational content of the annual NSHPCA conference. The lectureship is funded through a generous endowment established by Stephen and Arlene Waymire in memory of their late niece, Gillian MacMichael. During her battle with cancer, Gillian was cared for at home and at the QEII Health Sciences Centre by the Capital Health Integrated Palliative Care Service, in collaboration with other healthcare providers. The purpose of this lectureship is to ensure healthcare professionals have an ongoing opportunity to learn about palliative care from respected people in the field.
The conference program will also feature local experts who will present on medication management, existential suffering and developing goals of care for patients facing life limiting illnesses. “ The committee worked to design a program which would allow physicians and other health professionals to support their patients as they move through various settings of care,” says Colleen Cash, Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association.
